Wednesday Hodgepodge

http://www.fromthissideofthepond.com/

1. What is something you'll never forget about the age you are right now?

Probably the struggle of unemployment, job hunting, meeting Boyfriend, and how wonderful my family and friends have been to me through everything. Also, while I'm unhappy on the full-time job front, I am happy on the relationship front.

2. What's a household chore you've never done? How have you managed that???

Let's see . . . I vacuum, dust, clean the bathroom (including the toilet and by the way boys are gross  lol), sweep, mop, do windows/mirrors, do laundry, clean out the fridge, clean out the fire place, clean off the back porch and do the dishes. I even feed and water the chickens, collect the eggs, let the chickens out in the morning and lock them up at night. I also feed and water the cats and clean out the litter boxes twice a day. I have even watered the frogs - I will not feed them, however. I also bring would up to the back porch and made kindling (and I still have all my fingers!). I even iron clothes when necessary (although now that Grandma moved out I will have to break down and actually buy an ironing board at some point lol) What's left? If there's something left . . . it probably means I make it Boyfriend's duty. ;o)

3. Does nature shape our personalities more than nurture? Explain?

I think it can depend on the situation. But both are important in shaping who all of us become, however.

4. Friday (February 28th) is 'Something on a Stick Day'...funny because Zoanna over at A Penchant for Pens recently sent me an idea for a question relating to this topic. What's your favorite food eaten on a stick?

Corndog. Hands down. Especially a fair corndog. Oh yeah. :o)

5. Which of your five senses do you treasure most, and why?

Ooooh. That's tough. I think sight. I've seen some wonderful things and places and there are still many more I want to see.

6. What's the best music, theatre, or sporting venue you've been to? What made it great?

Locally I would say the Cascade Theater in town. In it's early years it was a hot spot for Hollywood movie stars (seriously). Eventually it ceased to be that; when I was a kid it was the dollar movies - 4 screens. A few years ago it was restored to it's former glory and it's ah-mazing what had be covered up with wall paper and paint over the years. It's a beautiful theater and it's a great, small, local venue for concerts, plays and comedians. Boyfriend and I saw Diamond Rio there in November and recently Lonestar for my birthday.

http://intensityadvisors.com/portfolio/additional-projects/

They found such beautiful artwork under all the layers of wall paper and paint and were able to restore it. It had been a dingy building for so long, and unused for an long period of time. Now it attracts big names like Lonestar, Bill Cosby, and many more that I have no idea who they are! lol

 7. It's the last week of the month...in five words or less bid adieu to your February.

Thanks for the memories.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Two months of unemployment, a few interviews but so far, no takers. Oy ve. I've turned into a housewife without the wife part. lol  I bake cookies, take care of the house, run errands, job hunt, work on the weekends and a little during the week for my grandparents magazine, and pack a little here and there (we still don't know where we're moving to so packing is random). But it is nice that Boyfriend's Grandma has moved out as now we can just be us and we don't have to worry about how much noise we make in the kitchen cooking and cleaning while she's asleep at 7:30.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

http://www.fromthissideofthepond.com

1. Are we always responsible for our actions? Are there any exceptions?

I think there can be extenuating circumstances. But for the most part, I do believe we are responsible for our actions.

2.  Has anyone from your home town become famous?

The most notable was Ashley Parker Angel from that show Making the Band. Redding was so proud of itself that somebody from this town made it in the band.

3. January was National Slow Cooker month. Do you own a slow cooker/crock pot? Did you use it last month? What's a favorite dish you make using a slow cooker or crock pot?

I do own a crock pot. I think it's been used once or twice. By Boyfriend. And I had probably had it a couple of years . . . collecting dust. Obviously not much of a cook am I. lol

4. How do you feel about private companies collecting data about you?

The word "creepy" comes to mind. It's one thing if Target collects my shopping data so they can send me coupons for cat litter or hair gel or something. But the fact that companies sell or "rent" out people's information is just scandalous in my opinion.

5. The Games of the 2014 Winter Olympics kick off with their opening ceremony this coming Friday....will you be watching? Which Winter Olympic event would you most like to see in person? Have you ever been to Russia? Any desire to go, Olympics or otherwise?

Probably not. With the time difference from Russia, it would be my luck that the few things I enjoy watching (ice skating mostly) would be on at 2 a.m. I will be fast asleep next to my own personal furnace (aka Boyfriend). I'd love to watch the ice skaters in person, but I do enjoy it on TV because I can actually see what's happening whereas in person I'd see a dot moving around on ice. lol I have never been to Russia, although part of me would like to go one day - the history buff in me anyway. But I have other places I'd like to go first.

6. Share a good or bad sports related memory from your childhood or teen years.

Once in 6th grade PE, we were playing volleyball. Our class was co-ed, and one of the boys hit the ball and it (purely by accident) came at me and hit me square in the  . . . um . . . chest. He had been right next to me and he hit it pretty hard. While everyone else was laughing their butts off at my chest pain, he was the only one who was genuinely concerned. He didn't touch me but he ran right up to me apologizing profusely. He apologized every day for rest of the week. Multiple times a day. I finally had to tell him I wasn't mad at him and that I had forgiven him the accident.

7. What's a must have song for you on a work out play list? If you don't work out, run, swim, bike, walk, or anything else that could be construed as 'exercise', then what's a song that movtivates you to at least get up off the couch?

Anything upbeat.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

So far in my month of unemployment I have read 7 books, submitted 30 or more job applications, cleaned, done laundry, baked cookies, brought firewood up to the house, have looked into online schooling for medical transcription (still kinda pricey), begun watching season 7 of Psych (which my BFF gave me for Christmas and am finally getting around to), begun packing but have since quit since I we have no idea where we're going yet, spent quality time my cat Miss Harriet, begun playing Farmville 2 and Castleville again on the computer, and have fairly successfully hid from Boyfriend's Grandma (which I only have to do until the 11th). I am however, beginning to run out of things to keep me occupied. Especially free things. Sigh.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

http://www.fromthissideofthepond.com/

1. It's  been said that one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. Do you think that's true? Do you find that an easy exercise most mornings? What's something positive you told yourself today? If you missed that boat, what's something positive you could tell yourself tomorrow?

Sadly, I don't believe I start out by telling myself something positive. I could tell myself "go get 'em tiger" for job hunting. I could tell myself a few things, but I think the stresses just wear me down and I don't think about them as much. That's what happens sometimes when you're unemployed, fighting with unemployment, packing without knowing where you're going, waiting to hear back about a house loan, looking for houses, contemplating going back to school, filling out job applications and never hearing a single thing back, and worrying about how you'll pay your bills when they come calling in a few weeks.

2. There will be karaoke at the next party you attend...are you in? Or will you be faking a sore throat?

Sore throat!! lol

3. January 29th is National Puzzle Day...what's something you've found puzzling recently?

The fact that I've sent out at least 20 applications for positions I'm qualified for and not one freaking phone call. Seriously?!

4.  Jigsaw, crossword, acrostic, logic, sudoku, word search...what's your favorite kind of puzzle, and when did you last work one?

Word search for me. I usually only do those when I travel, though. So it's pretty rare that I do them.

5. Recently a writer by the name of Amy Glass ruffled feathers with a post she wrote saying she looks down on young women with husbands and kids and she's not sorry. Among other things, she says women will be equal with men when we stop saying house work and real work are equally important. You can read the whole piece by clicking here.
What say you? Do you think men and women are equal in the 21st century? Why or why not?

We are and aren't equal. I doubt we'll ever be truly equal. It will always be a debate. But I don't believe women should look down on other women because of the life they chose. You don't have a say over my choices and I don't have a say in yours. If I choose to be a stay-at-home mom, that is my choice. If I choose to have a career instead of a family, it's my choice. If you don't like my choice, tough cookies, it wasn't yours to make anyway. I know women that do the stay-at-home thing, and they're constantly busy. I know women that work part-time so they can be at home part of the time for the family. I know women who could care less about getting married and/or having kids because they are focused on their careers. I know a gal who was so sure about never wanting children, she had a procedure done that makes her sterile. Do I agree with it? No. I don't. But I don't judge her for it - it was her choice to do it and she's happy with it.

6. What's a product you've noticed in the grocery store that you'd like to try, but haven't yet?

I can't think of anything that I've seen recently.

7. The author, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) was born this week in 1832 (January 27th).  Which character from his celebrated novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, would you most like to meet, and why? Here's a link to a character list if you need help on this one.

Probably Alice so I can ask her why she followed a random rabbit, agreed to a tea party full of crazy creatures serving who knows what in the tea, agreed to eat mushrooms from a "stranger", not to mention she listened to a cat who sometimes only appeared as a head. lol

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Boyfriend is waiting to hear about a potential loan so we can buy a house - hopefully. I'm job hunting like crazy. And I'm considering an online school for medical transcription. With my science background and my 60 words per minute I think I can totally do the job. It's the tuition I'm a bit worried about. They still cost more than I'd like.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

http://www.fromthissideofthepond.com

1. Are you settling for something?

I don't believe so. Unless settling for not having something because I cannot afford it counts. Like nightstands. Otherwise, nope.

2.  It wasn't that long ago almost every store in the US locked doors and turned out lights on Thanksgiving Day. This year many will be open all day Thursday, giving shoppers a jump start on 'Black Friday'. In your opinion is this a good thing or a not so good thing? Will you be shopping on Thanksgiving Day?

NO, it is NOT a good thing at all. I find it disgusting! Unless I need something specifically for Turkey Day dinner, I am NOT leaving my house. I will enjoy my day off with my family and friends, hosting it for the first time. I've never really understood Black Friday to begin with, but at least it didn't tread too much on the holiday. I'm sorry but it's just absolutely ridiculous and out of control.

3. Speaking of shopping... I saw a recent article on the twelve best shopping cities in the world. In order they are-
New York, Tokyo, London, Kuala Lumpur, Paris, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Vienna, Dubai, Madrid, Milan, and Seoul.
Ever shopped in any of the cities listed? In which city would you most like to pull out the plastic or cold hard cash?

I shopped a bit in New York, but I was only there for like 36 hours. Don't think I bought anything, though. I did see a play, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and bought a meal from McDonalds though.

4.  When did you last dine by candlelight?

Hmmm. Several months ago when Boyfriend cooked a nice steak dinner and we ate out on the patio with candlelight.

5. What do you have too much of?

Just stuff! lol It's amazing how much one accumulates over time!

6. The Hunger Games...are you a fan?  Did you read the book(s)?  Will you/have you seen the movie?  Will you/have you seen Catching Fire?  No spoilers please!

OMG Yes a big fan!! It wasn't until I saw previews for the first movie and it sounded interesting. People told me I wouldn't regret reading the books so I tried them. I was hooked ever since. I've read  the books so many times I've lost count. I own the first movie and I cannot wait to see the second one!!

7. Share your plans for Thanksgiving Day. The who, the where, the what...especially the what! As in what's for dinner?  If you're one of my International visitors, whose homeland doesn't celebrate American Thanksgiving (the whole world doesn't ya know!), then still tell us your plans for Thursday.

Boyfriend, Grandma and I are hosting Thanksgiving dinner at our new place. We're excited to have our family out to see the house. I've never hosted it before, but Boyfriend has. My parents are thrilled to finally not be the hosts for once. lol As for dinner, it's a typical dinner with turkey, ham, stuffing, green salad, pink jello-type salad, asparagus, dinner rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy with pecan and pumpkin pies and a cheesecake for dessert.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Boyfriend finally got himself a job back in the water industry!!! He's been looking for a long time. It's part time, but he'll be Operations Manager at a small mountain district about 45 minutes West of town. And in the next 6 months, it appears he'll be taking over the small town's neighboring district and be running both districts. It's not ideal and not perfect, but it's a JOB and in his preferred industry. We are just so thrilled!!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

http://www.fromthissideofthepond.com/

1. What lesson has failure taught you?

That just because you didn't get what you wanted doesn't mean you won't someday. Also? Patience. And that somethings just may not be a good fit for you. It truly sucks to fail at something and to feel like a failure. But sometimes that means it wasn't meant to be.

2. What decision are you glad you made?

To move back to Redding. There were times I felt like a failure in the job searching, but I never would have met Boyfriend had I not moved back. Therefore, I wouldn't have moved into this new house we're renting on acreage.

3. I've been a little bit surprised to see fully lit and decorated Christmas trees popping up for the past several weeks in friend's Instagram feeds. So tell the truth-is your tree up and decorated, and if so when did that happen? If not, when will you be decking the halls?

NO. Just NO. November is too early. Nothing Christmasy is allowed as a decoration until at least the day after Thanksgiving. This includes all decorations, the tree, and Christmas movies. There's a house about a half mile down the main road from us that I saw Christmas lights on a couple weeks ago. I nearly had a fit.

I usually put the tree up about two to three weeks before Christmas.  Christmas lights and decorations go up as I have time after Thanksgiving.

4. Solitaire-Poker-Rummy-Hearts-Go Fish-Old Maid...which game of cards would you most like to join?
I like solitarie, go fish and old maid. I'm terrible at poker, and haven't played rummy or hearts in so long I don't think I remember how.

5. This question comes to you courtesy of a Facebook friend, who once upon a time had a blog...When you're feeling stressed do you snack a lot or are you more the 'can't eat' type?

Depends on the stress.  But usually I'd say I eat my stress away.

6.  Have you ever reviewed a product or service on line? Was your review favorable or less than favorable?
I don't think I've ever reviewed a product online. I know I've emailed restaurants when the service has been absolutely terrible. But probably not the same thing.

7. What was the best conversation you had yesterday?
Me telling Boyfriend about my terrible Monday at the office, part of it including Bubbles. He let me get it out. She made a comment and because I was having a 'case of the Mondays', it just really pissed me off.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Seriously, there are just not enough hours in a day anymore! Between the three jobs, I just feel like I can't seem to get anything done. I am allowed an evening or two to just relax and not do anything, but still, it just seems to me that I am not getting anything done. A few of the things I have done, I come home the next day to find it undone by Boyfriend's Grandma as she's put something of hers there instead. Oh well. Lots of places to put things in this house, so not a huge worry. Boyfriend even brought in the dresser we're borrowing from Granny (it was a spare, don't worry! lol) for Boyfriend's clothes so we can finally get his stuff out of suitcases and off the floor. It's been driving me crazy. Plus we brought in the bookshelf a good family friend made for my parents years ago. Fits perfectly in one corner, with Grandma's couch on the wall next to it. Now just have to figure out what is going to go on it! lol

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What's one thing you learned in September?

Oh, it's definitely way more than one thing! lol I started a new job on the 16th of September, so I've been learning lots in the auto industry. How to do their deposits (they are rather particular, understandably), how to do dealer trades (we don't have what you want? we'll get it for you!), clearing my "cash sales schedule" (reconciling outstanding debits/credits), logging in driver sheets (someone has to drive the cars for dealer trades), wholesales, and cutting checks when needed. And that's just the beginning! I'm only in my third week and my head is spinning. I have a lot more to learn. And I have a lot to keep organized. And our desks are really small.

2. Acorn squash, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, yellow squash, zucchini squash, or blech! hold the squash... what's your favorite squash? What's your favorite way to prepare your favorite squash?

Blech! Hold the squash!  I have yet to learn to like it. Much to Boyfriend and Mother's dismay.

3. The older I get the_______________________________.

. . . more I see my mother in me! It's scary and comforting all at the same time.

4. What's your favorite television theme song ever?

Psych. Also one of my favoritest TV shows. Ever.

 5. What do you wish you'd spent more time doing five years ago?

Having fun. I worked a lot. The worst part was that it was graveyard, which didn't help much. But I volunteered as well. But really, I was working a lot.
6. What item do you most need (or want) to add to your wardrobe this fall?

Well, my new job is "business casual", so I could use a few more tops than the few I bought before starting my job. Plus, I really need black and brown socks. And I could use a couple sweaters that aren't black (because it can get quite chilly in the office.

7. On October 2, 1950 the Peanuts cartoon was introduced to the world. What was your favorite cartoon when you were a kid?

Charlie Brown. My Granddad gave me the nickname of Charlie Brown when I was a baby and it stuck. So, Peanuts will always hold a special place in my heart. But Snoopy is pretty awesome, too.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I've already got a list going for Christmas presents. I will be on a very strict budget and presents will have to be on the cheaper side of things, but I've got ideas. And usually I don't until December. So, I'm well ahead of myself. And if I can, I'm going to buy USA Made. It's a challenge for myself.  :)

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What's one thing that's still the same about you as when you were young?

Well, I'm still a picky eater. I will say that I'm much better than I was when I was a kid, though. Life has found a way to get me to eat more than I used to.

2. What's more important-history or science? Why?

Hmm. Both are very important. History is important because if we don't study it and learn from it, we can be doomed to repeat the same mistakes. History shows us how the world has changed, how the species of our world have changed and adapted and evolved. How we as humans have evolved and learned.

Science is also important (and also a part of history) because without science, we can't learn about how everything works and why. We can't improve our livelihoods (like increasing our lifespans, medicine's, etc.).

3. Lima, kidney, string, garbanzo, black or pinto-your favorite bean?

Refried beans. Best way to go. lol

4. What's something people come to your town to do?

Visit Shasta and/or Whiskeytown Lake, see Shasta Dam, Shasta Caverns, etc. Lots to see and do. We usually refrain from telling folks that's it's so hot around here in the Summer that the Devil himself wouldn't dream of visiting.

5. When was the last time you were in a meeting? Sum it up for us in five words or less.

When I worked at the vet lab. Snooze.

 6. What special event would you like a VIP pass to attend?

Hmm. The Oscars.

7. What's one piece of advice you'd give a writer?

If it's what you love, don't give up.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Just wanted to send a thank you to all those from last week's Hodgepodge for the condolences regarding my Papa Dennis. I appreciate it. We are all doing okay, we have our moments of course, but we're doing okay. The important thing is that he is no longer suffering and that Heaven has a new angel to watch over us.

The weather has been nice and cool here the last few days. I'm absolutely loving it. I've missed my hoodies. And my slippers. Almost time for them to make a full-time appearance.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. When did you last sing happy birthday to someone? When were you last sung to? Does that embarrass you or do you enjoy being the center of attention on your special day?

I would say my parents, whose birthdays were at the end of March and beginning of April. My family always sings me Happy Birthday. I hope no one says anything if we're at a restaurant because I hate having the waiters/waitresses making such a racket. But inevitably, someone does and I wind up blushing like it's nobody's business.

2.  Name a famous or 'infamous' person (living or deceased) who shares your birth day and month. Is that someone you'd like to meet in person if it were possible?

John Williams, composer of movie scores for Superman, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws, and Jurassic Park. Also, James Dean, Lana Turner, Jack Lemmon, Gary Coleman, John Grisham, Jules Vern and General Sherman.

3. Someone hands you a box tied up in a lovely bow...what are you hoping to find inside?

Well, now that will depend on the size of the box. lol

4. What can you guarantee about yourself?

My loyalty.

5. Talking art and beautiful cities here...'The Last Supper' in the Santa Maria della Grazie Abbey in Milan Italy or 'The Mona Lisa' in The Louvre, Paris...which would you most like to see up close and in person?  Why?

Now why would you make me choose between the two? That's just mean. No, I will go to both places and see both of them. One day.

6. Your favorite dessert?

Choices, choices, choices. Popcorn and M&M's.

7. This coming weekend marks the official start of autumn (in the Northern hemisphere)...what is something you do to get ready for fall? What is one thing you're looking forward to on your fall calendar? Spring or fall-which do you prefer?

I start breaking out the sweaters and wait for it to cool off. Here in Redding, it can stay pretty dang warm til October sometimes. Seriously, our summer is too hot for the Devil himself. I love the fall weather - the cool crisp air. But I also enjoy spring because by then I'm tired of the cold and am ready for the warmth!

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Had a sad day - finally got the phone call this morning that Papa D passed away during the night. We've been waiting for the call for the last week or so, knowing it was only a matter of time. Mom had to call me at work and let me know because one of my cousins posted something about it on FB, and she didn't want me to find out that way. Fortunately for me I hadn't been on FB this morning because its only the second day of my new job. I found out on my lunch break, so I went off by myself for a bit and cried and gathered myself and went in and informed my boss, asking for a day when I found out when we would have a family gathering at the ranch. Papa D's request was to be cremated and his ashes spread out over his ranch, no services, just a family gathering. Simple. Just they way he was.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Picture postcards were first printed back in the mid-1800's and deltiology is the official name for postcard collecting. When did you last send a postcard?  Receive one? Do you save postcards sent to you? Do you collect and/or send postcards when you travel?

It's been awhile since I sent a postcard and received one. I like to send a postcard if I'm traveling, though. Sometimes they have decent pictures that you can use if you know yours won't turn out well. I had put together a "postcard campaign" a couple years ago, but I had several people sign up and then never respond when it was their turn to send one. Then I moved and things got a bit chaotic and I put it on hold for a bit. I'd love to start it up again, but I don't have a ton of money to go spending on stamps, so until I can afford a bit of fun, I'm hoping to get it going again. :)

2. What treat do you most like to indulge in while on vacation?

Things that are really bad. Like fair food. Oh dear Lord it tastes so dang good!! I haven't been to a fair in close to ten years and this year I went to two. One of them twice. The first one, Boyfriend and I went and made a beeline for the corn dog stand. A small slice of heaven. At the other fair, my BFF and I indulged in cheese fries, nachos and fudge. In all honesty, the cheese fries were the best of them all. I hadn't had a batch of cheese fries in a very long time. Hey, it's okay to indulge once in awhile.

3. Are you good at hiding your feelings?

Nope, not very good at it all. Sometimes I can, but not too often.

4. Does your town/city/county still deliver telephone books to your home? Do you check the yellow pages when searching for a local business number or has the internet replaced the phone book in your home?

Technically, yes. We live in a rural area, so the drop a bag of them off at the top of the street at the mail box and the residents take one.

5. Would you rather be first or last?

Well, first, honestly. I've been last, and while it can teach you sportsmanship and manners, it still just plain sucks.

6. July is National Park and Recreation Month (in America, but everyone can still play along)...where and when were you last in a park?  Did you participate in any recreational activities while you were there?

Hmm, probably Lassen National Park, delivering my grandparents magazine. Although Whiskeytown Lake is a National Recreation area, does that count, too?

7.  What was one of your worst ideas?

Where do I start? lol (j/k)

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Well, with any luck, I may have a second part-time job in about two weeks! It's the Pet Nutritional Consultant I wrote about before, where I had the interview but they had technically already hired someone for my area. Well, my "let's go ahead and interview anyway attitude" totally paid off, as the gal called me on Monday and said that the person they had hired claimed to have sort of emergency and had to leave town. The gal remembered me and called me and asked if I was still interested, which I said yes. So now I have tons of paperwork to fill out and send back in. But my start date would be August 2 if all goes well. If all goes well, it may only be a few hours each weekend, but it's a few extra dollars and the pay is $13/hr. I haven't made more then $10/hr since my lab job in Sacramento. But I'm cool with an extra couple hundred bucks a month to put towards bills, or put in my savings for emergencies. I'll keep y'all posted on how it works out. :)

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Summertime is a season of reunions, weddings, and other family celebrations and gatherings...are any of the above on your calendar in the next two months?

Yep! On Friday, I have family from Georgia coming to visit for about a week. And in July, I have a cousin getting married (he asked her to marry him 35 years ago, and she said no because he wasn't a member of the Mormon Church. He recently moved back to Redding, met up with her and started dating, he asked again and she said yes [she hasn't been a practicing Mormon in a long time]).

2. June is National Iced Tea Month...are you an iced tea drinker? If so, how do you like yours (sweet, flavored, etc)?

Not really. Raspberry flavored iced tea is okay, but otherwise, I'm just not a tea drinker.

3. When were you last nervous?  Looking back, was the 'event' actually nerve-worthy?

A job interview I had  awhile back. I'm always nervous for those. And I think you should be a little nervous for a job interview.

4. The bristle toothbrush was invented in China on June 26, 1498...not sure how that date was pinned down so precisely but, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being sick to your stomach and 1 being not at all, how nervous do you feel when you're headed to the dentist?  Do you see your dentist twice a year?

Yeah, that is a bit odd how they have a specific date for that. lol I'm not too nervous when I go to the dentist. I used to go twice a year, but then I left my job that had benefits, and it's been a year and a half since I've been. I just don't have the money to pay for a cleaning, but I really want one. I usually get lectured for not flossing like I should.

5. What's making news in your town this week?

 Here are tonight's headlines:

One person dies, 5 year old suffers trauma in crash.
Baseball franchise effort for Redding falls through.
Skeletal remains unearthed by Tehama County detectives.
Controversial cable company may file for bankruptcy; Tehama County customers also dropped.
Heat expected this week in Redding.

6. Curtains, drapes, blinds...your window treatment of choice? Are there any bare windows in your house? Is that by choice or because you haven't gotten around to covering them?

A combination of those. At my parents house, there are blinds and curtains on most of the windows. I think the laundry room window is the only one without anything on it.

7. Summertime is officially here (in the Northern hemisphere anyway)...what one song is a must-have on your summer playlist?

It's just a fun song. :)

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I spent yesterday evening at a friend's house, trying to help her figure out her wedding invitations. She had no idea what she wanted, so Mom and I went over there to help her out. Her big sister also showed up to help out, and we had Panda Express for dinner. After about three and a half hours, I think we finally got her a template to go off of, something she really liked. A big shout-out to Google Image Search as well. Good thing we got it figured out (for the most part, at least), because her invitations will need to go out in August. It's closer than you think!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What do you think makes a good dad?

A guy who loves his kid(s) unconditionally and supports them in their endeavors. A guy who lets his kid(s) know every day that he loves them, just as they are. A guy who teaches his kid(s) how to be responsible a responsible adult, and instills a conscience and respect for others.

2.  What's something you learned from your own father?

Here's one recent thing: Recently I had a day where I felt like a complete failure. I've been looking for work (full-time) since last October with only one bite, which obviously didn't happen since I'm still looking. There were other things in there and I felt like a disappointment to a family member because I didn't want what they wanted (or wished, rather) me to want. Dad pulled me aside and told me that I wasn't a failure in way, shape, or form. To anyone. And that he had moments when he was my age where he thought he was making a huge mistake taking a job. And that if I hadn't moved back and been doing what I was doing, I wouldn't have met Boyfriend. And most importantly that he loved me and supported me. Then he gave me a big bear hug.

3. It's your birthday-what kind of cake will we be having?

I'm either easy or boring. White cake with white frosting. Or the "funfetti" mix.

4. When you're faced with a big decision are you more of a go with your gut type of person, or are you someone who reasons it all out, weighing the pros and cons?

I do both. Sometimes you have to just go with your gut, which doesn't usually lead me astray. But I can over-think things as well and that can lead me astray.

5. June is National Dairy Month. What's your favorite dairy item? Most often purchased dairy item?

Cheese. Sharp Cheddar cheese. :)

6. Explorer Jacques Cousteau was born on June 11, 1910....what's something you've recently discovered or something you'd like to explore?

There's so much I'd love to explore - I wouldn't know where to begin!

7. Are you typical of your generation?

Hmmm. Yes and no.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Since we're kind of on a Father's Day theme, I think Boyfriend and I may take my parents out on his boat for Father's Day. Just a nice, easy day relaxing on the lake. :)

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What question do you often ask yourself?

Am I going to have enough to make my next car payment? This is the unfortunate reality of being unemployed (for the most part) and working part-time. Bleh.

2. Do you grow roses? What's your favorite color of rose?  Ever been given a dozen roses?  Where was the prettiest rose or rose garden you remember seeing?

Mom grows them, I don't. I would say a red rose is my favorite color. I've been given a dozen roses only a couple of times in my life. The latest was from Boyfriend about a month ago or so, just because.

3. Do you read the freshness dates on grocery store products?  Will you use eggs past their 'use by' date?  Take medication that's expired? Buy a dented can?

I typically do read the freshness dates. Some things are fine for awhile after their "expiration" dates, like eggs or some medications - most just lose their efficacy  slowly over time. I try not to buy a dented can, though, if I can help it.

4. Should athletes be role models?

Yes and no. Athletes that show good sportsmanship, don't use steroids, and stay away from getting arrested, cheating, and 2 minute marriages can be good role models for kids. But unfortunately, may athletes let the fame and the money go to their heads and quickly become bad role models.

5. Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal became the first explorers to reach the top of Mt. Everest on this date (May 29) back in 1953. What's something you hope to achieve in your lifetime?

Well, it's not climbing Everest, that's for sure. I'd love to be able to go to Europe one day.

6. What would you do if you had twenty acres of land and the money to develop it any way you choose?

Build my dream house.  :o)

7. If I invite you to a party with a 7 PM start time, what time will I actually see you there?

7pm. Mostly because I'm going to assume that it's not like one of my friend's parties where it may start at 7pm, but you can drop by anytime after that.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Two more weeks until my parents get back from their 5 week vacation. Boyfriend will get back from his time volunteering at a Boyscout camp on Friday. And Granny will come back from her little 10 day trip Wednesday or Thursday. Yep, at some point during my parents being gone 5 weeks, everyone ditched me. It's okay though. Boyfriend and I ditched Granny for the first weekend my parents were gone to go camping. Plus when Boyfriend went up to the Boyscout camp last Friday, I followed suit - on Saturday, for the night, to see him in action as he mills furniture out of wood for the Boyscout camp, plus I helped in the kitchen. However, it's definitely time for my parents to come back home. lol

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. It's National Bike Week...do you own a bicycle? When did you last ride a bike?

I don't own a bike anymore. I got rid of it by the time I graduated college. So, that would also be the last time I rode a bike, was in Chico. I stopped because even though Chico is a "bike friendly" town, due to the amount of college kids, because the "bike friendly" drivers don't pay any freaking attention to the bicyclists. A roommate of mine nearly got run over once.

2. What's something you learned in school that wasn't part of the curriculum?

How to french braid my own hair. In chemistry class, of all places.

3. What's a food you've never tried, but want to try? What's a food you've tried and will never try again?

I'm not sure about the first part of the question. But I tried sushi once and I will never do that shit again. OMG. Worst. Food. EVER. The rest of my Japanese meal wasn't very good either, but the sushi was the most memorable part of it.

4. Have you been more demanding on yourself lately or less? Why? Do you think that's a good trend?

Both . . . although I'm not sure that's possible. I'm trying to find full-time work, spending an inordinate amount of time with Boyfriend, and working part-time. I'm pressuring myself to find full-time work because I despise dealing with unemployment because, I'm sorry, they are a bunch of assholes. Rude ones.

5. Who is your favorite book, movie, or TV show villain?

Delores Umbridge. hehe.

6. How concerned are you about identity theft?

Pretty concerned. Especially since my bank account was hacked online a few years ago.

7. I saw this last question on Dawn's blog a couple of week's ago and asked if I could share. Everybody hop over and say hi, but first answer this...would you rather have an ordinary home in an extraordinary place or an extraordinary home in an ordinary place?

Hmmm. Well, I'd probably go with ordinary house in extraordinary place. Because an extraordinary home will probably require too much cleaning. And an extraordinary place is wherever you want it to be, whether it's on the beach, in the mountains, in the 'burbs, on acreage, etc.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

The last two weeks have been a whole new experience for me. I'm house-sitting for my parents while they are on a 5 week vacation, and Boyfriend has been spending a lot of time at the house with me. He's taken up the all the mowing and seeing to Mom's garden. He even power-washed the garage floor. He spoils our hound dog, Charley, more than we do. He cooks dinner - never worry, I help by making awesome salads (his words), garlic bread, cleaning the corn, you know, simple things. Here's my "new" experience: I've never lived with someone, and the last two weeks have been about as close as I've been to that. We went grocery shopping together the other day; I've never grocery shopped with a boyfriend before. (Seriously.) And he and I even talked about this tonight (Tuesday) . . . he has just settled in with my family, he likes them and they like him, and loves my parents property . . . and he told me he's never "settled into a family" or relationship quite this way and or fast. I have never had any of that, so, it's all new to me. I'm liking it, but it does take some getting used to. lol

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. When the children of today grow up, what do you think they'll say about this period in time? What do you most hope they remember?

Hmm, probably the turbulent times of terrorist acts. I hope they would remember the good that people did to try to prevent horrible acts and the good that people did afterward.

2. National Teacher's Day is celebrated in the US of A on the first Tuesday in May, this year May 7th...share how a particular teacher positively impacted you.

I remember my 6th grade math teacher, Mr. Anderson, was pretty much the only math teacher that didn't make me feel like the world's biggest idiot because I didn't understand math. Considering I've had teachers that basically laughed at my lack of all skills mathematical, Mr. Anderson was the one didn't make me feel stupid and ashamed. There really need to be more math teachers like him.

3. What's a dish your mama made, that if set in front of you today would whisk you right back to childhood?

Spaghetti. Or "basghetti" as I called it as a kid.

4. Mother May I was a game we played when I was growing up...no pieces, parts, or plugs required. What games from childhood do you remember loving that were also pieces, parts, and plug-free?

I played a lot of Simon Says, Red Light Green Light and Tag (anything could be "base", like a tree or the sidewalk).

5. Besides your own mother, tell us about a woman who influenced you as a child?

I'm not really sure I can pick just one. Besides Mom, my grandmothers, aunts, and family friends were all big influences.

6. Mamma Mia! What's the best play or musical you've ever seen?

The one musical I've enjoyed was The Sound of Music. Recently I saw Les Miserables and really enjoyed that, too.

7. What are three smells that make you feel nostalgic?

Horses. The beach. The woods.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

My parents officially started their first long trip to kick of their retirements. They will be gone for 5 whole weeks, going to the western ball parks, minus Oakland because they've been there and aren't A's fans and the Mariners because they've been there before. But they'll go to San Francisco, LA, Anaheim, San Diego, Phoenix, and Denver. They'll also go to some national parks and whatnot along the way as well. So I'm entrusted with not burning the house down and taking care of Granny. Fortunately, W has offered to help with things I don't particularly enjoy like mowing. Yay!

Hodgepodge (and I met someone)

1. April showers bring May flowers...what have you been showered with this month?

I was showered with a beautiful bouquet of red roses and a steak dinner complete with baked potato, beans, salad, and garlic bread - by candlelight - on Monday night. I knew about the dinner, but I had no idea about the flowers. Let me just say, I have not had a guy buy me flowers (besides Dad) in close to 10 years. I think the guy thought I was over-reacting a little, but really, I wasn't. They were "just because" and that meant more to me than anything. I guess I could also say, I've been showered with affection by a really awesome person this month and I'm just so happy.

2. What is the nature of compassion?  Is it learned or innate?  Can compassion be learned?  If you're a parent is this something you've purposely sought to instill in your children, and if so how?

Whenever I become a parent, I will definitely instill compassion into my kids. I think it's very important. I think in some cases, it can be learned, but I think it's better if it's been instilled into you from an early age.

3. Do you prefer to watch romantic comedy or romantic drama...or are you rolling your eyes saying bring on the action flicks?

I love movies from every genre, as long as it's good anyway. I love a funny, witty romantic comedy, but I also enjoy a good romantic drama sometimes, too.

4.  It's April which means baseball season is officially upon us here in the US of A. Humphrey Bogart is quoted as saying "A hot dog at the ballgame beats roast beef at the Ritz." Agree or Disagree?

Baseball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you tell I love me some baseball?? lol A Giant Dog is way better than anything at the Ritz because it's at the ball game. Seriously. Oh and AT&T Park makes a mean set of garlic fries. YUM!!

5. What's something in your community or city that needs fixing or improving?

Hmmm. Well our city hasn't been able to afford our Civic Center for awhile, so they allowed some big church in town to take it over. I recently found out the church totally sucked at managing it, so they got kicked out and now someone else is managing it. We're not a major city, but it's still a very important venue and if we could get more concerts and shows there, it would be helpful.

6. Share a song you enjoy that mentions flowers or a specific flower in its title.

Um. The only song that comes to mind is "Pickin' Wildflowers" . . . can't even remember who sings it, but it's a country song.

7. April 22nd is Earth Day...do you believe there's life on other planets?  That wasn't the question you were expecting was it?

Yep. I do. If the universe is truly as vast as we believe it is, there has to be other life out there. No offense, but that would be an awful amount of wasted space if there wasn't life on other planets.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Obviously you can tell by my answer to the first question that I've met someone. Some of my regular readers know that I've been searching for a long time, and some even had their own ideas of who I'd meet and how they'd sweep me off my feet - which made me love them even more! lol Anyway, I have met someone, and that's where a lot of my time has been going lately (that and job hunting!). I'll write more later, but I've been wanting to share it for awhile. :o)

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What are your plans for Easter? Are you cooking a big lunch or dinner?  Dyeing eggs? Attending a sun rise service?  Eating too much chocolate?

Mom is hosting Easter dinner, we're cooking up a tri-tip, a ham, some salads, and a lemon meringue pie. My aunt is bringing a cheesecake, too. We haven't dyed eggs in years, but we always eat too much chocolate!

2.  What is something you feel too young to do?

To start coloring my hair to cover gray hairs! lol

3.  "Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud...it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs..."
Of the characteristics mentioned in the biblical definition of love which do you find most difficult to live out and why?

I would think "keeps no record of wrongs", simply because so many people don't forget how someone wronged them.

4. What's a springtime flower you associate with your childhood?

Hmmmm. I have no idea.

5.  Ever sung karaoke? If so, what's your go-to song? If not and you're given the opportunity, would you?

I've sung karaoke before but always in a group. And practically forced onto the stage. I refuse to subject poor innocent people to my major lack of singing skills. I'm nice that way.

6. What is something you keep in a basket?

My random crap. My little basket (courtesy of Mom), sits on the corner of the kitchen counter.

7.  When was the last time you felt foolish?

Pretty much every day. lol

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I freaking love Top Gear. I'm your typical girl and know next to nothing about cars. I mean except how to drive, gas up, and I can find where the oil goes. So for me to love a show about cars is kinda strange. But really. I freaking love that show. Tanner, Rutledge, and Adam do some of the stupidest things ever, but it typically winds up pretty funny. Here's one of my faves. (I should probably mention that Tanner is a professional driver, and one shouldn't attempt what he's doing)

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. March 20th is the first day of spring...is she a lion or a lamb in your part of the world?

I'd go with lamb. Here in northern California we've been having 70* (F) days, which has been pretty awesome. Although we could really use some rain still. And today (Tuesday) a storm moved in and started raining around 2pm. We don't expect a ton of rain from it, but we'll take it.

2. What's the most dreaded task on your spring clean to-do list?  Do you have a 'plan of attack'?

Well, probably waxing the 5th wheel. My parents say they'll pay me, and since I'm looking for work again, I should be a smart girl and take it. But it's so big. lol

3. Peas...love 'em or hate 'em?  What's a favorite dish you make using peas?

I'm a pea hater. Although, oddly enough, the one (and only) time I ever ate Japanese food, the peas were my saving grace. And the water. I'm pretty sure the waitress thought I was a camel. A pea loving camel. But normally, I hate peas.

4.  Do you feel under appreciated?

Usually only at a job. My friends and family are pretty good about telling each other how much they are appreciated.

5. Have you been using Google Reader?  If so, what are you switching to now that GR has announced retirement?  If not, how do you read your favorite blogs?

I haven not used Google Reader. I tried it once and I didn't like it. I've just been getting my blogs on my Blogger Dashboard. Simple and easy.

6. Anne Bradstreet is credited with the following quote~
"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant;  if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."

Agree or Disagree?  Why?

I agree. If you've never had to struggle for anything in your life, then you have no idea how good you actually have it. You then also have no respect for those that struggle every day with something.

7.  When did you last 'spring for something'?  What was it?

Um . . . lunch with Mom last week? Although I used a gift card, so I'm not really sure that counts. lol I did spring by jumping up and down when my BFF told me that a country band from my childhood that sings my absolute favoritist song ever is playing at her county fair in the Bay Area in July. Because I'm totally going.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

My job and I parted ways recently. I was so unhappy, I usually felt physically ill going to work every day. I also couldn't please the office manager, no matter how hard I tried or how often I tried to change who I was. I never felt like I belonged there, I was so afraid of making a mistake because when I did, the manager would berate and belittle me. So I'm currently looking, again, for employment. It's depressing, looking for work. I'm checking online every day, and I'm signing up with a temp agency to see if they can help at all as well. Keep your fingers crossed that something comes my way.
